Growth feels slow or fast depending on what you compare it with, and most creators compare with the wrong thing — a channel ten times their size or a viral outlier. The Creator Economy Benchmarker places your channel in percentiles against channels of the same size and niche across six measures: revenue per subscriber, CPM, engagement, growth rate, watch time per subscriber and upload frequency. It shows exactly where you trail your peers.
This guide explains the six measures, why size-matched benchmarks are the only honest ones, and how to turn a low percentile into a plan.
Six measures
Revenue per subscriber shows how well you monetise the audience you have. CPM shows topic and geography value. Engagement shows content resonance. Growth rate shows momentum relative to size. Watch time per subscriber shows loyalty. Upload frequency shows consistency. Together they separate "small but healthy" from "large but stalled".
Size-matched
A 5% monthly growth rate is exceptional at 500k subscribers and slow at 2k. Engagement rates fall as channels grow. Benchmarks are therefore computed against a band of channels within roughly a factor of two of your size in the same niche. That is the comparison that tells you whether you are doing well.
From percentile to plan
The lowest percentile with the highest leverage is the place to start. Low revenue per subscriber with high engagement means you are under-monetising — see the Niche Monetization Map. Low watch time per subscriber with high growth means you are acquiring ghosts — see the Subscriber Quality Score. The report links each weak measure to the relevant fix.
Tips
- Paste the actual numbers from Studio; estimated inputs produce estimated percentiles.
- Re-benchmark quarterly; percentiles move slowly and monthly checks just add noise.
- A 50th percentile across the board is fine — focus on the one measure under 30.
Common mistakes
- Benchmarking against the niche leader — Their numbers are not a plan.
- Optimising the highest percentile further — Diminishing returns.
- Ignoring revenue per subscriber — It is the measure most creators never compute and most often lag on.
Worked example
Input: "Home espresso; 8k subs; $310/month; 4.1% engagement; +180 subs/month; 3 uploads/month."
What the report returned: Revenue/sub 38th pct, CPM 55th, engagement 78th, growth 41st, watch time/sub 62nd, frequency 35th. Priority: upload frequency (weekly slot) then monetisation (affiliate gear links). Engagement is a strength to lean into for sponsorships.
Frequently asked questions
Where do the benchmarks come from?
Aggregate ranges observed across public channel data and creator-reported figures, grouped by niche and size band, refreshed regularly. They are ranges, not exact percentiles.
Does it need my analytics?
No — enter the six numbers from Studio for an accurate placement.
What if my niche is unusual?
Enter the closest broader niche; the report notes when the benchmark set is thin.
How is this different from the Channel Health Analyzer?
Health audits your channel against best practice. Benchmarker compares you with peers on outcomes.
