How to Use Brand Safety Checker (2026 Guide)

Scan your video metadata for content that brands flag as unsafe for sponsorship — before pitching deals.

Sponsors screen creators with tools that flag content categories their brand will not sit next to — and the bar is stricter than YouTube's own ad policy. A video that earns full AdSense can still cost you a deal. The Brand Safety Checker scans your content description or metadata against the categories brand-safety vendors use, scores sponsor-readiness, and recommends edits that widen your appeal without changing your voice.

This guide explains the categories, how brand safety differs from monetisation policy, and how to present a checked channel to sponsors.

The categories

Controversy and divisive debate, politics and elections, adult and suggestive themes, profanity, alcohol and substances, dangerous activities, tragedy and conflict, and — for many consumer brands — competitor mentions and unmoderated comment sections. Each flag is tagged with which sponsor categories care (a gaming peripheral brand tolerates profanity; a bank does not).

Brand safety versus ad policy

YouTube decides whether to serve ads. Brands decide whether to sponsor. The second is stricter and more varied: a video may be fully monetised and still be off-limits for a family, finance or healthcare brand. The sponsor-readiness rating estimates how many of the common sponsor categories your content is acceptable to.

Presenting to sponsors

Run the checker on your last ten videos and quote the readiness rating in your pitch deck. Sponsors that see you have thought about it move faster. Where the recommended edits are cheap — a bleep, a comment filter, a disclaimer — make them before pitching; where they would change your identity, target sponsors whose category tolerates it instead.

Tips

  • Describe the actual content, including language and any sensitive topics; a sanitised description gives a useless score.
  • Check comment moderation settings — an unmoderated section is a frequent, fixable flag.
  • Pair with the Niche Monetization Map's sponsorship categories to target the right brands.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming monetised means brand-safe — Different bar.
  • Sanitising the channel for every brand — Target brands that fit; do not erase what makes the channel work.
  • Ignoring old videos — Sponsors scroll back.

Worked example

Input: "Home espresso reviews; occasional mild swearing; strong opinions on overpriced gear; comments unmoderated."

What the report returned: Brand safety 74. Flags: profanity (low; blocks family and finance brands), competitor criticism (low; matters to gear brands), unmoderated comments (medium; fixable). Sponsor-readiness: 7 of 10 categories. Edits: enable comment hold-for-review, bleep in sponsor-integrated videos.

Frequently asked questions

Is brand safety the same as advertiser-friendly?

No — advertiser-friendly is YouTube's ad policy. Brand safety is what individual sponsors will accept, which varies by brand and is often stricter.

Can I check a whole channel?

Run it on several representative videos; the report notes consistency across them.

Do sponsors really use these tools?

Agencies and larger brands do; smaller brands look manually but apply similar categories.

Should I remove all swearing?

Only if you want brands that require it. Many categories are fine with mild language.
